DC Power Systems (June 7-8, 2017): This course covers the theory and design of the DC power systems that are typically used in standby applications. It is intended for any personnel involved in the specification, procurement and installation of DC power systems.

Battery Data Analysis (September 6-7, 2017): This course provides an in-depth look at the measurable battery parameters and their value in providing information with respect to a battery’s reliability. It is intended for supervisory personnel with responsibility for the analysis of the collected battery data plus the determination of any remedial action required.

Discharge Testing & Analysis: (October 4-5, 2017): This course will outline each of the steps required to prepare and carryout a discharge test in accordance with IEEE recommended practices. It will include hands on training during which both a constant power capacity discharge and a service discharge using a typical substation load profile will be carried out.

Introduction to Battery Management for Standby Power Systems (December 6-7, 2017): This course will provide an introduction on why and how to implement a battery management program. It is intended for all personnel who have responsibility for the operation and management of batteries in a standby power environment.

PRC-005-2 Compliance (Custom 1 or 2 Day Course): This course is designed to help Utility companies ensure that their operation and maintenance procedures are in compliance with the battery maintenance requirements of NERC PRC-005-2. It is intended for all personnel with responsibility for the implementation and operation of compliant.

Eagle Eye University: Battery Management Training Course

(October 2016) – Eagle Eye Power Solutions has an upcoming course in Eagle Eye University! December 7-8 will be a training course on Battery Management for Standby Power Systems. This course will provide an introduction on why and how to implement a battery management program. The program will cover all aspects of battery management from safety, battery types and applications, recommended practices, testing and condition analysis. The course is intended for all personnel who have responsibility for the operation and management of batteries in a standby power environment.

The course will be split into two days. On the first day, the students will learn about battery safety, battery theory for VLA, VRLA, NiCad, and Lithium batteries, and basic design principles and components of a standby power system. The last portion of the first day will cover IEEE Recommended Practices: 450-2010, 1188-2005, 1106-2005, 1497-2012, and 1657-2009. During the second day, they will go over battery operations, discharge testing, ohmic measurement, and data analysis.

Attendees in different industries will leave with a better understanding of battery management for standby power systems. Eagle Eye University: 2016 Battery Training Courses

(August 2016)-Eagle Eye Power Solutions has an upcoming course in Eagle Eye University! September 7-8 will be a training course on Battery Data Analysis. This course will outline each of the steps required to prepare and carry out a discharge test in accordance with IEEE recommended practices. It will include hands on training during which both a constant power capacity discharge and a service discharge using a typical substation load profile will be carried out.

This two-day course will be split up by measurable battery parameters and data analytics. During the first day, the students will learn the importance of discharge testing and the discharge test types. They will discuss operational requirements and perform an initial battery condition assessment, test set up, and discharge test. To end the first day, they will begin learning about data analysis. The second day of the course will continue data analysis, and they will work together to carry out a capacity and service test. Before each hands on test, the students will be given the load bank to be used for that test. After the tests, the students will calculate the battery capacity based on the results.

Attendees in different industries will leave with a better understanding of battery discharge testing and analysis. NERC PRC-005-3 Updates: Utility Battery Testing Compliance – What’s New?!

(June 2013) — NERC (North American Electric Reliability Corporation) is continuing to make changes to standard PRC-005. In November 2012, NERC Standard PRC-005-2 was officially approved by the NERC Board of Trustees. The purpose of NERC PRC-005-2 is to document and implement programs for the maintenance of all protection systems affecting the reliability of the Bulk Electric System (BES) so that these Protection Systems are kept in working order. All North American utilities must comply with NERC Standards.

Almost immediately NERC drew up a draft for PRC-005-3 that will likely replace PRC-005-2. The standard modifies PRC-005-2 to address the directive issued by FERC (Federal Energy Regulatory Commission) in Order No. 758 for “NERC to include the maintenance and testing of reclosing relays that can affect the reliable operation of the Bulk Power System.”

The Future Development Plan is as Follows:

  • Post for 30-day formal comment (April 2013)
  • Post for a concurrent 45-day comment and initial ballot (June 2013)
  • Conduct recirculation ballot (August 2013)

NERC PRC-005-2 Standards Change Announcement

(November 2012) — NERC (North American Electric Reliability Corporation) has made changes to standard PRC-005. The purpose of NERC PRC-005-2 is to document and implement programs for the maintenance of all protection systems affecting the reliability of the Bulk Electric System (BES) so that these Protection Systems are kept in working order. All North American utilities must comply to NERC Standards.

On November 7, 2012 it was decided the purpose of standard PRC-005-2 should remain "to ensure all transmission and generation Protection Systems affecting the reliability of the Bulk Electric System (BES) are maintained and tested." In Order 693 FERC (Federal Energy Regulatory Commission) directed that changes be made to these standards. The standards are not going to be consolidated into a single standard to reduce the cost of compliance. A number of technical shortcomings in these standards should be corrected to provide reliable performance when responding to abnormal system conditions.

An open ballot period was concluded on Wednesday October 24, 2012, with an 80.51% approval rate. For more information on PRC-005-2 please visit NERC's official website for history of drafts.
