Gas Detection Equipment & Ventilation Systems

When lead-acid batteries are put on charge, they can and will release hydrogen gas, a class 4 flammable substance. If not monitored and properly ventilated (≤1% Hydrogen) or detected, the percent of hydrogen can rise to a level where there is a high risk for combustion (≥4% Hydrogen), potentially resulting in a catastrophic explosion.

To ensure this dangerous situation does not occur in the workplace, Eagle Eye Power Solutions delivers security and comfort by offering high-performance gas detection equipment (GD-Series) paired with our reliable EEPS ventilation systems (VS-Series).

Hydrogen Detectors and Battery Room Ventilation

Hydrogen gas detectors work by detecting when concentration levels reach 1%, illuminating a yellow LED and then closing the 1% relay once it does. This dry contact will then power up the ventilation fan, which will reduce hydrogen levels back to a safe level. Since hydrogen is lighter than air, the exhaust fan will pull air from the ceiling, where the hydrogen gas can build up. If the concentration levels rise to 2%, the red LED will flash, an alarm will sound, and the 2% relay will then close.

Eagle Eye Power Solutions offers different size ventilation fans to meet various designs of battery rooms. They range from a single fan with mechanical louvers all the way up to a large 4-fan system with an N+1 redundancy. These fans are equipped with a “Positive Airflow Shut Off” feature, where the doors can be closed by an external electric command to stop any airflow from passing through the fans.

Section 480.9 (A) of the National Electric Code requires that lead acid batteries be ventilated adequately. And in Article 320 of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA 70E) Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace, building owners and design engineers can find requirements for safely designing a battery charging room.

Put your mind at ease, and for your critical battery room gas detection and ventilation needs, look to Eagle Eye Power Solutions for products you can count on to protect your business and personnel from potential explosions.
